Another secret pal greeting went out today. I believe I skipped posting a couple because I forgot to take photos. This time I remembered to take one before I sealed the envelope except I ended up mounting the mini art on a metallic brown paper too. Must be loosing my memory. lol More colored pencil work and this time some italicized gothic for the art quote.

Framed!
Last weekend I picked up the pastel bird I brought to Michael’s to get framed a couple of weeks ago and hung it up in the second bathroom near the shower. I was very happy with how the custom framing turned out. Three mats really make it look finished.
Colored pencil greeting
Sent out another secret pal greeting this week. Hopefully she likes this one. It was inspired by a photo I took during last year’s visit to Port Aransas. We saw this guy at the UT Corpus Christi Marine Science Institute.
Drawing with colored pencils on colored paper is a fun challenge and creates a different look than using white paper.
Bathing bird finished
Last Friday, you might have read this post about a little pastel bird I started as a warm up for a larger pastel I plan to work on. I think I’ve finished the bird now. The pot looks better and the water droplets more defined especially in the foreground. Theodora8, a friend on Twitter, clarified that the photo was not hers but from a friend in Northern Ireland. She also identified the bird as a “cock blackbird“. Different from our New World blackbirds and more becoming, I might add, with that bright orange beak!
Coincidentally Michael’s has a 60% off custom framing coupon this week. It’s such a small drawing, only 6 by 6 inches, that it shouldn’t cost too much for a square frame especially with the coupon.
Pastel bird
I’ve been thinking what to make for a largish wall area by the front door. It has to be a good subject since it’ll be in such a prominent location.
About a year ago, I found In Pasture by Julien Dupre in the Washington University Kemper Art Museum (it wasn’t and isn’t still on display but it is pictured on their website here).
I keep thinking what a nice painting it is and have it as my wallpaper background on my computer. I don’t use oil paints any longer but decided to copy the painting for that front door area. I ended up settling on soft chalk pastels that I haven’t used since college about 6 years ago! So to warm up I started a little bird portrait inspired by a photo that a Twitter friend, Theodora8, took a couple of weeks ago. Here’s where I stopped this afternoon. I’ve still got to tweak the drawing, lighten up some places, and put in the water splashes.
